First for Freedom: An Outdoor Drama brings history off the page and onto the stage in a moving, immersive experience you won’t forget.
After several years away, the beloved outdoor drama is returning to Halifax County as part of the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.
Originally created for the nation’s Bicentennial, First for Freedom tells the powerful story of the Halifax Resolves—the first official action by an American colony calling for independence from Great Britain. Signed on April 12, 1776, this pivotal moment placed Halifax County at the very beginning of the American Revolution.
Now, nearly 250 years later, that story comes back to life on the very ground where history was made.
Performed as an outdoor drama and featuring a cast of local volunteer actors, First for Freedom recreates the tension, courage, and determination of the men and women who helped shape a nation. The production blends historical storytelling with immersive staging, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience history in the place it happened.
The return of First for Freedom is part of a broader effort to celebrate Halifax County’s role in American history and to provide meaningful cultural experiences for residents and visitors alike. The production also highlights the strength of local arts, with community members coming together to bring this historic story to the stage as a true labor of love.
Audiences can expect an engaging, family-friendly experience that combines history, performance, and the natural beauty of an outdoor setting.
